Block Island - off the coast of Rhode Island

Another 1,000 Place Before You Die recommendation today. We head to Block Island which is a ferry ride from Point Judith, about a 40 minute drive from Newport. The car ferry crosses the 17 miles in around 55 minutes and is fairly straight forward. Exception is that our car needs to be backed in and Russ gets "blocked" in the car. He escapes eventually but it is a tight squeeze.

The road system on the island is not extensive, plus there is only one settlement. We spend some time visiting the light houses, and a couple of other points of interest and include a stop for lunch at a cafe. We have time to visit the many shops in the town which can be neatly catagorised into Clothes, Jewellery and Eatery, the last consisting of cafes, pubs and ice cream shops. There are also a number of places for accommodation and hire of mopeds and bicycles. This is an island with a permanent population of 600, which swells to 15,000 in the summer. This island does not have the big houses of Nantucket or The Vineyard, and is geared towards bicycles and mopeds. It has a far more laid back persona.

Ted gets to have a photo shoot as the rain has stopped. It started out cloudy but the day was a beautiful day in the country.
