Founding Fathers and Lighthouses - Salem to West Yarmouth

A couple of days ago, we were in amongst the patriots fighting for freedom. Today we've gone back to the founding fathers and the pilgrims arriving on the Mayflower at Plimouth (yep it was an "i" back then but now it is "y"). There have been two monuments erected, one to the ideals of the founding fathers - and it is a pretty impressive monument - and the second to where the ships first sighted land and took refuge before heading north and landing.

Our lighthouse stops are along the coast of the Cape Cod peninsula. There are the Three Sisters, no longer operational and erected inland due to their previous location being eroded, to operational lighthouses at Chatham, Provincetown and other locations.

Provincetown
Provincetown, located at the tip of the Cape Cod peninsula is a summer tourist mecca. Narrow streets, pricey boutiques and tacky stores line the streets, with so called trendy food outlets. Not a place to be where the normal population of 3,000 swells to 60,000. We left without stopping!

We did find some very pretty towns out of the main tourist drive, especially a little harbour town of Harwich Port. There are some very pricey real estate and large boats abound, but away from the tourist traps, there is some very nice views. Our weather today is overcast with some sea mist, but pleasant enough for the long drive. And who can go past a lighthouse!!!!

  1. Americans love a good waving-woman statue, don't they?! He he.

The three sisters are quite short and stubby. Were they originally positioned high on a hill, perhaps?

    1. Yes, they were located high on a cliff, and were so named as they looked like three women with white dresses and black hats. They had to keep moving them back from the cliff as it eroded, and eventually it was decided one light could do the work of three, hence they current position in the middle of the wood.
