The island has 4 golf clubs, an airstrip serviced by planes from Boston, New York and of course, the private variety. There are still a few farms on the island, and they have cranberry bogs. Most of the buildings are constructed with shingles that weather to a grey colour, so the place looks a little drab, especially with the drizzle. But in summer the place must be a riot of colour as the roses and other flowering shrubs burst into flower. Many of the older buildings (some constructed in the 1700's) have trellis on the walls and even the roof to support the climbing, rambling roses.
As we leave Nantucket the weather starts to clear, and by the time we get back to the mainland, the sun is appearing. In Hyannis, we follow a walking trail developed to commemorate the legacy of JFK as the Kennedy's were very much a part of the Cape Cod / Nantucket / Martha's Vineyard set. They spent many summers in the area.

We move on to the Cape Cod Potato Chips factory, where we follow a self guided tour of the making of the humble potato chip. No photos allowed, but it was interesting to see the big potato reduced to a packet of chips!
Another diverse day, here in New England!

Always good to see how the `other half`live. The Kennedy`s were such a big family in the area but good to know they have remembered them......and something for the tourist to visit - on a wet day!Eve
ReplyDeleteSoooooo...how were the chips?! Thin, kettle style, crinkle cut? Yum, whichever way, I am guessing. Do you see them in shops outside the area?
ReplyDeleteOh wow, love that Cape Cod potato chip leadlight!
We have tasted better. They are thin, kettle style chips, and no, we haven't seen them too far from where they are made.
