Manchester, Vermont is a historic town. It has a resort that was established back in the mid-1700's, and though it has had a rocky road some years, it is still going strong as an up-market golf and spa resort in 2017.
Also in Manchester is 'Hilldene', the summer home of Robert Todd Lincoln, son of Abraham, and quite the politician and business man in his own right. The house did not have the excess so often found in homes of the Gilded Age and stayed in the Lincoln family for 3 generations before being donated to the state.
They still have a working dairy on the farm which produces cheese from both cows and goats. They do like their goats!
We move on and head more or less north, to meet up with Calvin Coolidge again, this time at his birth home state historic site. They have been able to assemble not only his birth home and his father's attached shop, but also the home of his mother's parents and the barns, his grand-parents home, and the home Calvin grew up in and later lived in after he retired from the presidency. The family church stands on the property, while across the road is the cemetery where several generations of Coolidge's are buried.

Our journey ends for the day in Rutland. The day has been cool, but we have mainly escaped the rain. Not sure we will be so lucky tomorrow.
Humble-ish beginnings for Calvin Coolidge...
ReplyDeleteAt least there would have been a steady cheese supply. Phew!
