We then head into New Hampshire via a covered bridge. Not the most travelled route for your normal tourist. The border is the Connecticut River, which this far north is not the same size river as it is further south.
In New Hampshire now, we are heading towards the highest peak in New England, Mt. Washington, in the Presidential Range. There are two prominent tourist attractions. The first is the Mt. Washington Hotel, a reminder of the early 20th century tourist and I'll let their marketing department provide the description - "Is gracious in ambience and generous in amenities. A favourite New England retreat of presidents, poets and celebrities, the hotel delights every sense with enchanting music, refined dining and luxurious décor."
The second attraction is the Cog Railway, the first Cog Railway in the world. It travels from 2,700ft. to the summit in just under an hour. The views are magnificent, and all this without the threat of rain.
We have now left New Hampshire and ventured into Maine for the night in Bethel, a town close to the Maine ski resorts and trails. We had great weather for our big scenery day. Hope it continues.

Quite an unusual chapel, indeed. But perhaps not quite so much as that white fence. Can't quite make out the purpose of that?!
ReplyDeleteWhat a unique railway experience. Yet another of the so very many ways that people have ingeniously fashioned wood throughout civilisation. That must have been a painstaking constructed back in the day.
And now, may the blue skies reign!
(Please note well the spelling there, Mother Nature!)
Love the old wooden railway....and quite an unusual name!
