Guess what we did this morning????
We went on a Moose Safari, and guess what, we saw
moose. Do you think we were excited??? We also saw 2 deer and a fox, but the focus here is on the moose.
We are in a van with a guide, Steve and we drive through the forest, looking for a moose and at our first turn we are greeted with a youngster licking the salt from a truck (they use salt on the roads in winter).
Further on we see three yearlings together, probably keeping together as they have just been run off by their mothers. The new season young are about to arrive so she has to kick out last years to make way!! We find another moose on the road, and rather than turn off into the forest he trots down the road in front of us.
Another disappears into the forest as we approach. Our count is up to 6 and we haven't got to the pond yet!
We arrive at West Branch Pond, to start our canoe safari. Steve sneaks down to the edge to see if there is a moose close by, and yes we are in luck. Another group are already out there looking at him. We try to be as quiet as possible, given that there needs to be 2 canoes launched and not so agile canoeists need to get in and get organised! We then paddle over and spend some time getting acquainted (Russ is the photographer as I am paddling).
We paddle around looking for any more takers, but alas all we see are some ducks. So we return to our van, and then back to Greenville, for breakfast and review. Some pretty happy campers after that morning's work!
After packing up we move on, to skirt the mountains. A couple more waterfalls and a covered bridge along the way as we have an early stop in Millinocket.
We have had a fantastic day. The day dawned beautiful and bright and we had sunny skies and a breeze to keep the flies away. Couldn't have asked for better.

Fabulous Mooses!! Eve

ReplyDeleteThey are just such unusual looking creatures! A moose face is a funny face, for sure. Everyone looks pretty canoe-competent, too, I must say!
